Office of the 2nd Ward Hosts 2nd Annual Black History Month Contest & Celebration
FLINT, MI – The Office of the 2nd Ward, under the leadership of City Council President Dr. Ladel Lewis, invites the community to attend the 2nd Annual Black History Month Contest & Celebration on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, Charles Mott Room. FREE
This year’s celebration will feature student presentations from Semaj Brown, Flint Poet Laureate’s internationally recognized integrative literacy and wellness platform, BLACK DANDELION: CONVERGENT VOICE™, which centers integrative literacy, art, and science toward holistic youth development.
Since 2021, the 2nd Ward has demonstrated a sustained commitment to supporting schools, parents, and innovative educational initiatives that uplift student voice and academic excellence. This annual Black History Month celebration reflects that legacy by spotlighting youth scholarship, creativity, and the power of encouragement as a catalyst for lifelong learning and community pride.
Presenting students will receive monetary awards in recognition of their work, and light refreshments will be provided. The event is designed as a festive, family-friendly celebration that affirms young scholars while honoring Black history, culture, and achievement.
African American History Month, observed each February in the United States and Canada, honors the enduring contributions of African Americans to society. The observance was established in the 1920s by historian Carter G. Woodson, widely regarded as the “Father of Black History,” to ensure the accurate preservation and celebration of Black history, achievements, and resilience.
Community members, families, educators, and students are encouraged to attend and support Flint’s young scholars as they share their voices and talents.
